Strand Genomics Walks Away with the Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Technology Award for its avadis Platform.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Frost & Sullivan's recent analysis, Advances in Bioinformatics and Clinical Informatics, selected Strand Genomics Ltd. (India) as the recipient of the 2005 Excellence in Technology Award in the field of Bioinformatics for its visually-oriented bioinformatics platform, 'avadis'. Strand operates on a unique business model, one that is a combination of high-end technology consulting and software product development.

Each year, this award is given to a company that has pioneered the development of an innovative technology and its introduction into the market -- a technology that has either impacted or has the potential to impact several market sectors. This award recognizes the company's successful technology development that will bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. It also recognizes the company's overall technical excellence and its commitment toward technology innovation.

Since experiments using technologies such as microarrays generate enormous amounts of data, there has been a large amount of software developed to address the problem of arranging this data. However, the research community does not have sufficient statistical and programming knowledge and researchers are unable to use their features optimally.

"Strand's 'avadis' is a unique new platform for data mining. It is wrapped in a rich interactive visualization framework through robust and scalable software engineering," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Katherine Austin. "In addition, 'avadis prophetic' is a special edition of 'avadis' that has machine-learning modules for predictive modeling."

Numerous artificial intelligence-based machine-learning algorithms including Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines, and Decision Trees are available within 'avadis prophetic'.

The many applications of the 'avadis' platform include discovering biomarkers from gene expression; proteomics and clinical data; building potential diagnostic tests, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion/toxicity (ADME/Tox), and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models; and analyzing healthcare-provider performance.

The uniqueness of 'avadis prophetic' is its versatility in handling all these forms of data. It is also a huge help to biologists, chemists -- not just the statisticians -- by delivering powerful algorithms in an easy-to-use interface and rich interactive visualization.

On the strength of its bioinformatics technologies, Strand has obtained funding from key investors and agencies. It received $400,000 in 2003 from NMITLI (New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative) for development of the visualization platform, $1 million from India's Department of Science and Technology (DST) for further developing the enterprise capabilities of 'avadis'. In 2004, the Technology Group at the ICICI Bank and the Sponsored Research and Development Program (SPREAD) fund of the World Bank in India provided Strand with a grant of nearly $1 million for building in silico hepatotoxicity predictive models.

Strand will develop a modeling approach, primarily using systems biology techniques, to capture pathway dynamics in liver toxicity. It also has ongoing computational chemistry R&D for target-directed small molecule combinatorial chemistry and screening.

"The significance of 'avadis prophetic' lies in its ability to provide alternatives to end users -- people who know their data best but do not have sufficient statistical and programming knowledge," notes Ms Austin. "'Avadis prophetic' can generate better predictive models, which can save huge amounts of resources that are spent on expensive lab experiments, as the platform reduces chemistry and experimental infrastructure."
