Store reports record level of demand for pear cider.

DEMAND for home-grown pears is at record levels thanks to the soaring appetite for pear cider - "the once unfashionable yokel drink", Tesco revealed last night.

The drink has undergone a "Cinderella-like transformation", with its market growing from pounds 3.5m to pounds 46m in two years, according to the supermarket.

It has seen sales of pear cider - often known as perry - double in the last year alone.

And the national market is expanding by 156% annually, according to analysts AC Nielsen.

Tesco beer and cider buyer Ian Targett said: "In the last year pear cider has enjoyed a Cinderella-like transformation to become the biggest success story of the UK drinks industry."
