Storage unit pulls out as buffet.

Dual-function furniture design is especially important in tight quarters. In this small family room, what appears to be a built-in wall unit is actually a pull-out cabinet that doubles as a slender (25inch-deep) buffet counter or display shell Most of the time, the white-painted unit sits flush with the wall, housing a television, stereo, and collection of video and audio tapes. It slides back into its storage wall through a 30- by 60-inch opening framed into an interior wall.

The cabinet rolls on heavy-duty casters mounted to the underside of a plywood shell masked by a face frame. Receptacles and antenna feeds are built into the back wall of the storage recess. Owners Michelle and Rick Silver left enough extra cord to allow for movement.

Architect was Kwan-Lam Wong of Albany, California.
