Storage, display, and still a fireplace.

More than just a fireplace, this sculptural form includes storage places for a television, a video-cassette player, and shelves for display and books. Running along 9 feet of an inner wall in a small master bedroom, the unit extends only 29 1/2 inches into the room.

Centered in the 2-by-4 and gypsum-board shell is a prefabricate"zero-clearance" fireplace. By stepping the sides down from the chimney, San Diego architect Stephen Wallet added intriguing form. The right side angles back from the fireplace to clear an adjacent closet door. To make a fireproof hearth in front of the fireplace, Wallet removed the oak flooring and replaced it with backerboard and tile.
