Stop treating the earth like cesspit; Views of the North.

DON Brownlow's assessment of the worth of any given technology in monetary terms is precisely the habit we need to kick (Views of the North, April 13).

As recent events have shown, money can be created and supplied to serve the interests of those who wield the most influence over those in Government.

Nuclear power is a case in point having a raft of hidden subsidies, one of them being its uninsurable risks. The US had to draft the Price-Anderson act to protect the industry from large-scale nuclear accidents.

The current economic system of limitless growth is palpably stupid and unsustainable and yet it sets the projected requirements for power, water and other resources.

More nuclear would compound the reckless gambling that is already storing up trouble for the future.

We need economics that encourage technology that can cut a decent life for everyone within certain material limits. Treating the earth like a bottomless cesspit and poisoning its real wealth is pure folly.
