Stoke hold Chelsea on AVB debut.

Andre Villas-Boas's first Premier League game asChelseamanager ended in a rumbustuous goalless draw againstStoke Cityat the Britannia Stadium.

After a slow start, Chelsea dominated the second half, and were aggrieved with referee Mark Halsey who turned down a string of penalty appeals.

Stoke withstood

heavy pressure, and goalkeeperAsmir Begovicmade a superb save when he tippedNicolas Anelkachip onto the crossbar.

Villas-Boas sprung a selection surprise on his competitive debut for Chelsea, picking Fernando Torresup front, just four days after he suffered mild concussion playing forSpain.

That meant a place on the bench forDidier Drogba, a player who usually relishes the intense physical challenge of a trip to Stoke.

Tony Pulishanded a debut toJonathan Woodgate, signed on a free after his release by Tottenham, and the defender showed just what a fine player he is when not plagued by injuries.
