Still no superheavy elements.
A persistent prediction of nuclear physics is that certain "superheavy" element--with atomic numbers well above the 109 now known--should be able to form and last long enough to be detected. The belief persists in spite of several negative experiments. Peter Arumbruster of the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt, West Germany, and 39 others have tried and failed to make element 116 by bombarding cesium 248 with calcium 48, they report in the Feb. 4 PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS. In work at both GSI and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif., they report that they found nothing.
