Steward at club pocketed PS24,000.

SOCIAL club steward Alan Eastlake siphoned off thousands of pounds for himself in a gross betrayal of trust.

Eastlake was held in high regard by the club where he had worked for nearly 20 years.

Bosses at Ashington's Northern Social Club trusted the 40-year-old to collect and bank takings, stock the bar, pay staff and look after the accounts.

But when he struggled to pay his family's bills, Eastlake helped himself to the club's money. By the time he came clean, more than PS24,000 was missing and the club almost went out of business. Eastlake of Hesleyside, North Seaton, near Ashington, was given a suspended prison sentence.

Tony Cornberg, for Eastlake, said: "This all occurred because the cost of life's necessities were not being met, it was gas bills and the like, not gambling debts or anything like that."
