Steven J. Feldman, D.D.S.: changing the field of periodontology.

Venice periodontist Dr. Steven J. Feldman is on the forefront of the rapidly advancing field of periodontal surgery. A graduate of Marquette University Dental School in Wisconsin and the prestigious Tufts University periodontics program, he has practiced periodontal surgery in this area for the past 22 years and has established a reputation for experience and skill in periodontal surgery, implantology and skin grafting. He now has fully integrated periodontal laser surgery into his practice.

Three years ago, he and a colleague developed a remarkable new laser surgery for gum disease that eliminates the use of a scalpel in many surgeries. The laser surgery uses the FDA-approved Nd:yag laser and requires little or no anesthesia and causes minimal - or no - bleeding. Before this discovery, it usually took patients days to recover from traditional gum surgery; now they can immediately go home and eat without discomfort and they have less risk of infection, swelling and root sensitivity. "Laser surgery achieves the same results with little postoperative effect on the patients," Feldman says. Feldman also uses the laser to cosmetically correct irregular gum lines.

Feldman is highly skilled in implantology, the root replacement system for people who have missing teeth. He has performed more than 4,500 implant procedures since 1987 with a 97 percent success rate, using an innovative, sophisticated technique that eliminates most of the traditional incisions. Few periodontists in the country have yet mastered this procedure. In addition, Feldman uses the latest skin grafting technique for sufferers of gum disease. This technique prevents the need for removing tissue from the roof of the patient's mouth and the patient comes away with fewer wounds and complications and far less pain.

Although Feldman, a Diplomat of the International Congress of Oral Implantology, remains at the top of his field clinically, he is always concerned with the patient-doctor relationship. He works to establish not only a bond of trust and confidence with his patients, but an easy rapport as well, and his office staff is highly trained to serve all patients' needs.
