Stephen mother's hate mail.

Byline: VIK IYER

THE mother of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence has been sent racist hate mail.

Doreen Lawrence revealed how she fears for her safety at a conference to mark the third anniversary of the report on the investigation into her son's murder. She arrived there with a police protection officer.

It is believed the National Assembly Against Racism, the body behind the conference, received hate mail which included racist abuse together with a newspaper article featuring Mrs Lawrence.

But she defiantly told the 200-strong audience: "I am trying to live in hope because without hope we have nothing."

Mrs Lawrence, whose 18-year-old son was stabbed by a group of white men in Eltham in 1993, said: "It is a very difficult day for me due to the fact that I am bringing somebody here to protect my safety. Most of the time I don't feel safe."
