THE sight and sound of steam are set to come back to the main rail line through Devon and Cornwall.
Steam Dreams are taking bookings for train trips by steam to Devon and Cornwall starting from London Victoria, going on a tour of Devon and Cornwall on Tuesday, September 28, before a return trip to London on Friday, October 1.
The sight of the beautifully restored 61306 Mayflower and 45596 Bahamas is sure to be one that excites trainspotters, photographers and nostalgists alike.
The trip will take place under the power of steam between London Victoria and Plymouth, while the journey through Cornwall will be powered by diesel locomotives.
The B1 locomotive known as Mayflower is capable of hauling express passenger trains across the country and in its previous life was frequently seen between East Anglia and Scotland.
It will leave London Victoria station at 0845 and stop at Reading at 1034, Exeter at 1720, Plymouth at 1905 and arrive at Penzance at 2108.
On the return leg, it will leave Penzance at 0835, reach Plymouth at 1017, Exeter at 1208, Reading at 1731 and arrive at London Victoria at 1851.
Those on board will get to enjoy a threenight stay in Cornwall (although hotel accommodation isn't part of the price) and two full days in Cornwall to visit the area's heritage railways and attractions, as well as the unique experience of going on Brunel's Dawlish Sea Wall powered by the same type of train as their forefathers once enjoyed.
Prices for the trip start at PS325 for Premium Standard with two dining options also included.
For those seeking something more luxurious Premier Dining is from PS649.
The legendary Pullman Style Dining, where passengers seated in the 1950s and 60s era carriages will be decked out in a manner quite different to today with woodpanelled walls, table lamps and curtains in addition to the most comfortable seats, starts from PS849.
A Steam Dreams spokesperson said: "With elegant 1950s or 1960s carriages, wood-panelled walls, table lamps and curtains, combined with our most comfortable seats and the highest level of service make Pullman Style Dining our most popular class of travel.
"On a typical day trip, you will be served a three-course Champagne Breakfast on the outward journey and an evening meal on the return journey with canapes."
The Mayflower steam train will travel from London to Penzance and back DUNCAN SAVIDGE
