Steam goes out of hot spell.

BRITAIN was returning to more familiar temperatures today as the steam went out of the summer heatwave.

Sun worshippers across much of the country, who have basked in temperatures in the 80s for the past five days, were begrudgingly welcoming back more average British summertime weather.

Yesterday, despite temperatures dropping to a high of 26C (79F), thousands continued to flock to the seaside and bask in the heat.

Weather forecasters predicted today's weather would be similar to yesterday's but would deteriorate before tomorrow, when most places would see rain.

The humidity would continue to the weekend, PA WeatherCentre forecaster Graeme Kelly said.

The five-day heatwave was the second prolonged spell over 80F (27C) so far this summer, which is unusual for this country, Mr Kelly continued.

On Sunday, temperatures soared to 32C (90F), making Britain hotter than Hawaii.
