WEST ORANGE, N.J., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The former Essex Green two- screen cinema has been replaced by a dramatically modern and technologically advanced nine-screen theatre in the Essex Green Shopping Centre. The new multiplex facility, known as Essex Green Cinema 9, which opens on October 17, brings General Cinema Theatres to more than 1,120 screens.

Covering more than 43,000 square feet, the new state-of-the-art, 2,085- seat cinema offers amenities to create the ultimate movie-going experience:

-- stadium seating, which ensures an optimal view for every moviegoer;

-- THX, SDDS, DTS and Dolby Digital sound systems;

-- "love seats," -- two chairs with an arm rest that raises to create

snuggling room for two;

-- a three-tier, 75-foot concession counter including popular brands like

Pizzeria Uno, and Pretzelmaker hand-rolled pretzels as well as a cafe

featuring Starbucks coffee and pastries;

-- Self-serve centers for popcorn, soft drinks and mixed candy;

An anchor within the Essex Green Shopping Centre, General Cinema's Essex Green 9 will support Northern New Jersey with a variety of pre-opening community and philanthropic activities:

of pre-released family films will be featured throughout the day, and

funds will be raised for the West Orange Community House/Boy's and

Girl's Club of America.

-- "I heard it on KTU-Day" (Sunday, October 12) -- Consumers can view any

of five special movie screenings, including When Harry Met Sally,

Braveheart, Top Gun, Vertigo and the Indiana Jones trilogy, for free --

simply by mentioning "I heard it on KTU."

-- Remembering the Movies (Monday, October 13) -- Classic movies from past

years will be honored, bringing favorite films of the past to a theatre

Essex Green 9 is one of six General Cinema Theatres in New Jersey. Comfortable and innovative, it will be followed by a new 16-screen General Cinema megaplex in Clifton Commons, NJ in the fall of 1998. General Cinema is aggressively pursuing other sites in New Jersey.

General Cinema Theatres recently announced a $250 million expansion plan, and a joint venture with Robert Redford to create Sundance Cinemas, a stand- alone theatre circuit dedicated to the exhibition of the growing number of independent films. Last month, GC Companies, Inc. acquired theatre assets of United Artists Theatre Circuit, Inc., in Mexico and Argentina as a first step in its international growth strategy.

With 75 years experience as a motion picture exhibitor, General Cinema Theatres has a long history of breaking new ground for moviegoers. Founded in the greater Boston area in 1922, by the late Philip Smith (father of current General Cinema Companies' Chairman Richard Smith), GCT has been at the forefront of theatre innovations from its inception during the silent film era. In 1935 it opened one of the first successful drive-in theatres, and in 1951 built what is believed to have been the first suburban shopping center theatre. The company continues its leadership position and was the first theatre company to install THX sound systems in 1985 and the three-tier concession stand concept in 1994.

Currently General Cinema Theatres ranks third in annual revenues among the country's largest motion picture exhibitors. Collectively, its more than 1,120 screens in over 175 theatres in 24 states host more than 60 million moviegoers every year and generate revenues in excess of $450 million.
