State oppression under the microscope.

THE CITIZENS' Initiative ALERT, set up following the acquittal of ten police officers accused of beating two students, is holding a panel discussion on "Crisis: Social Resistance State Oppression" today.

The discussion comes on the back of numerous demonstrations organised by the movement across the island to protest against the Assizes Court decision. ALERT aims to arrange a series of discussions on topics concerning Cypriot society and that deal with "the corruption of the institutions that are supposed to serve and protect the citizens of our country".

The first discussion will take place today at 7.30pm at the Nicosia Municipal Multipurpose Centre (Famagusta Gate). Topics and speakers are: "Economic Crisis, Social Movements and State Depression"Aaby Stavros Tombazos; "Athens, December 2008" by Andreas Payiatsos (member of the National Secretariat of SYRIZA-Athens); and, "Migrants and Depression in Cyprus" by a representative of KISA (Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism). Veteran news chief, Andreas Paraschos, will be the coordinator.
