State attracts 10 new industries.

Expansions Number 19 in Quarter, Including Nucor's $33.7 Million Project at Hickman

TEN NEW INDUSTRIES for Arkansas were announced during the June-August quarter, highlighted by the $4 million being invested by De Wafelbakkers Inc. in North Little Rock.

In all, the 10 start-ups account for $10,190,000 in capital investment, according to the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission.

The biggest news in investment, though, was in expansions of Arkansas firms. The June-August period saw 19 businesses announce expansions totaling more than $114 million.

July was the heaviest month for business expansions, with eight accounting for $71.5 million.

In July, Nucor Steel announced a $33.7 million expansion of its Hickman (Mississippi County) plant.

The new industries and expansions, according to the AIDC, are expected to add 853 jobs. That includes 387 from the new businesses.

De Wafelbakkers Inc., which will produce European-style waffles from the North Little Rock plant, is expected to employ 150.

Today's Kids, a Booneville toy manufacturer, is investing $8 million in an expansion that will add 100 jobs. Molex Inc., a Maumelle firm that makes wire connectors, is undergoing a $5 million expansion that will also lead to 100 more jobs.

Mississippi County has another big expansion besides Nucor. Blytheville's Agriculture Minerals, which produces anhydrous ammonia, urea, nitric acid and other solutions, is undergoing a $26 million expansion.

Crossett's Georgia-Pacific Corp. plant had the third-largest expansion announcement with a planned $17.7 million job in the works.

For the year, Arkansas has attracted 27 new industries accounting for 1,590 jobs at an investment of $65,203,000. Also in 1993, 47 plant expansions have been announced, with 958 jobs created at an investment of $411,263,748.
