StarSight Telecast Licenses Electronic Program Guide Technology to Matsushita Consumer Electronics Company; Panasonic to Incorporate Starsight Features Into New DSS Product Line.

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 1996--StarSight Telecast Inc. (NASDAQ:SGHT), today announced a licensing agreement with Matsushita Consumer Electronics Co. (MCEC) which authorizes the incorporation of certain StarSight electronic TV program guide features into the new Panasonic digital satellite system (DSS) product line.

The licensed StarSight features will be initially incorporated into two Panasonic DSS models available in 1996.

One-touch tuning and one-button VCR recording are just two of many significant patented features of the StarSight guide. One-touch tuning allows viewers to instantly tune to a desired program directly from the program guide by highlighting their selection and pressing a button.

One-button VCR recording lets viewers program their VCRs to record any program appearing in the guide with the touch of a single button.

"Digital satellite systems are becoming very popular with consumers because of the wide range of programming options and the superb audio and video quality these products offer." said Brian Klosterman, senior vice president of marketing at StarSight Telecast. "However, the vast number of channels available creates the need for a navigational tool to easily find and record the programs viewers want to watch. By licensing StarSight's technology, including one-touch tuning and one-button record features, Matsushita can offer DSS products with an electronic program guide consumers want and need."

"Panasonic in known for marketing exciting products that give the consumer both cutting-edge technology and features that are truly useful," said Lisa D'Angelo, national marketing manager, Matsushita Consumer Electronics Company. "StarSight more than meets these criteria. The new Panasonic DSS receivers will bring the consumer more than 175 channels of incredible digital images and sounds. StarSight will let our DSS purchasers easily take advantage of this wealth of programming."

StarSight Telecast holds U.S. and international patents covering a wide range of electronic program guide features, and additional patent applications are pending that relate to the user interface and other aspects of electronic program guides. Two of its recently issued patents apply to, among other things, an electronic program grid guide that gives a consumer the ability to get information about a program via a pop-up window that is displayed on the television screen, the ability to change the channel order; and the ability to create a favorite channel list.
