Star Wood set for a Wizzard night out.

MOTORISTS were warned to stay clear of Birmingham city centre this afternoon for the Christmas lights switch-on.

A number of routes were closing between 4pm and 6pm to make way for Santa and his reindeer.

The parade was starting outside Marks & Spencer in High Street at 4.30pm and taking in many of the city's busiest streets.

Brummie rocker Roy Wood, of ELO and Wizzard fame, will be inducted into the Broad Street Walk of Stars at the end of the parade in Brindleyplace at about 5.30pm.

Special events are being staged to tie-in with the procession, including a family activities workshop by a reindeer pen at the start line and a magical illuminations display at St Philip's Cathedral. A Christmas Galleon show is being held in Victoria Square and a Heliosphere aerial display in Centenary Square.

It's part of a programme of festive events in the city, including the Frankfurt Christmas Market opening on Thursday.

The full list of roads being closed: Corporation Street (between New Street and Cherry Street) Cannon Street Bennetts Hill Temple Street Waterloo Street Colmore Row (between Victoria Square and Church Street) Gas Street Berkley Street Broad Street (from Paradise Circus to Five Ways) Sheepcote Street (from Broad Street to Brindleyplace entrance)

Big name: Roy Wood will be inducted into Broad Street's Walk of Fame today.
