Stan the man deserving of recognition says Davies.

Byline: Lisa Smith

Aston Villa's Curtis Davies was full of praise for his team-mate and man-of-thematch Stiliyan Petrov as the Bulgarian helped guide Martin O'Neill's men to third place in the Barclays Premier League, writes Lisa Smith.

Villa's 2-1 triumph over Roy Keane's Black Cats at Villa Park saw them leapfrog Arsenal into the top three after the Londoners had themselves been on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline at home to Hull City.

Central defender Davies was delighted with his team's efforts throughout their fifth game in only 13 days but even more thrilled with Petrov, who helped create the winning goal for John Carew and was instrumental in keeping at bay Sunderland's five-man midfield.

Davies said: "That was a good win. We started off slowly but the resilience of our team showed again. We went out there, managed to get two quick goals and never looked like getting beaten.

"We had a few more chances, a few more openings that never quite came off but we stayed strong again and saw it out. "

Reflecting on Petrov's performance, Davies said: "The man of the match award normally goes to one of about four players and I think you all know who those players are! For Stan to get it was brilliant and I think he was top-class again.

"He is showing why he is staying in that central midfield and it is going to be hard to displace him."

Petrov took time to win over the fans after a difficult settling-in period last season but Davies is convinced that is behind him and that he has won the hearts and minds of supporters.

He added: "I wasn't here when Stan came but since I've been here he has been spot on and you can't really fault him.

"Last year, he had a stage where he wasn't involved for six or seven games but he is a strong character, a strong player, and he can always come back and put in performances like that."

Villa, like Petrov, are showing a winning mentality and Davies said: "If Sunderland had scored later in the game they could have sat back on it but we went straight away at them after they scored and we managed to punish them with two quick goals.

"After that, they tried playing three upfront with 20 minutes left but we were strong throughout the team and got the win we deserved.

"That is three wins on the trot now and we are in the top four but we won't get carried away. Manchester United aren't near the top four at the moment tenth but if the season finishes like that I'll eat my hat.

"At the end of the day, you can't get carried away with where we are because there is still a team that has got to come back into it. But we will take positives from it. We are doing well and as long as we are within touching distance of the top teams throughout the season, obviously it gives you confidence.

"We took our chances today and the main thing is that we keep winning. You can play the best football in the world and lose games. I'd rather play poor football and win games. As long as we are up there, I am happy."
