CLASSIC Laurel and Hardy films are to be shown at a Liverpool cinema this summer to introduce the comedy greats to a whole new generation.

The screenings, which will mark the 125th anniversary of Stan Laurel's birth, will open with a gala launch night at Liverpool's Showcase Cinema on the East Lancs Road in Norris Green on Monday, June 1. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy appeared in more than 100 films together during their career, including 23 feature films and more than 70 shorts.

And a selection of those films will be shown in all their timeless glory at Showcase cinemas all over the country in June.

James Dobbin, director of event cinema at Showcase Cinemas, said: "We're pleased to be showing these classic films to audiences of all ages this summer, while celebrating the 125th anniversary of the birth of Stan Laurel.

"We're looking forward to inviting customers to experience Laurel and Hardy on our state-of-the-art screens, 62 years after they last appeared on stage in Liverpool."

Some of the screenings will take place in towns and cities which have been visited by Laurel and Hardy - the duo visited Liverpool three times between 1947 and 1953.

The screenings have received support from Ricky Gervais, who cites Laurel and Hardy as one of the biggest inspirations for his comedy work.

Gervais (left) said: "Anything that helps preserve the legend of the greatest comedy team of all time for future generations is a good thing.

"I'm so glad they're showing the glory of Laurel and Hardy in cinemas this June."

Tickets for the Liverpool .screenings will go on sale next week. For more information, visit www.laurelandhardyroadshow.co.uk
