Stadium cash plea.

Labour MP Stephen Hepburn today attacked National Lottery cash distributors for refusing to give pounds 11 million to upgrade Gateshead International Stadium.

The Jarrow MP took the issue up with Sports Minister Richard Caborn who is due to take part in Sunday's Great North Run.

Mr Hepburn said: "I know that you are looking for ward to doing the Great North Run next week. When you do so you will pass Gateshead Stadium , which you will see is in dire need of investment."

Pair flee fire

A COUPLE fled to safety when a fire alarm went off after a grill pan on the cooker in the kitchen burst into flames around 7pm yesterday. The blaze wrecked the cooker, and the downstairs rooms of the house in Bassenfell, Albany Village, Washington, were smoke-logged. Firemen from Washington tackled the blaze.

Fight remorse

TWO men involved in a midnight punch-up in Chester-le-Street were "horrified" by their behaviour when they saw CCTV footage, Durham Crown Court heard. Robert Nunn, 28, of Wansbeck Close, Chester-le-Street was given a 200-hour community service order and Barry Nicholson, 23, of Lambourne Close, Burnmoor, a two-year community rehabilitation order.

Conmen alert

DODGY door-to-door salesmen are on the prowl on Tyneside, police warned today. They are calling at homes in Gateshead selling and fitting door locks and other security measures which is said to be of poor quality but expensive.

Police are concerned that they are targeting vulnerable members of the public, particularly the elderly.

Boy for court

A YOUTH of 17 is due to appear before Sunderland magistrates tomorrow accused of assaulting a 14-year-old who was admitted to Sunderland Royal Hospital with burns to his body.

Factory blaze

VANDALS were blamed today for a blaze which damaged a disused factory in Tilley Road on the Crowther industrial estate, Washington, at 7.30pm yesterday.

Cancer appeal

ONE hundred supermarket workers were today launching a cancer appeal. The Asda staff were starting the firm's In The Pink Breast Cancer fund raising appeal at The Angel of the North. MPs Fraser Kemp and Joyce Quin were joining them.

Bin menace

FIREFIGHTERS hit out at yobs who are wasting their time by setting fire to wheelie bins in Newcastle. There has been a spate of such fires in the city's West End.
