St. Mark's, Shiremoor, 40th anniversary celebrations.

Extra seating had to be put out at St. Mark's, Shiremoor last month when people from near and far crowded into the building to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its consecration. There are still members of the congregation who can remember worshipping in the "old" St. Mark's and were greatly involved in all the excitement of moving to the new building in 1967.

Apart from the regular worshipping family of St. Mark's, and friends from local churches, all the former Vicars and four of the former Curates were present for a memorable concel-ebrated Mass of Thanksgiving at which the preacher was the Bishop of St. Edmundsbury & Ipswich who was Vicar 1985-91. Also present were the Vicar, Reader and a Churchwarden from St. Mark's, Woolston in the Diocese of Winchester with whom the parish has been developing links for the last three years. The extent to which St. Mark's has influenced many people was evidenced by the presence of former worshippers who had travelled from Scotland, Wales, Berkshire, Hampshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire to be present for the occasion.

The children and young people of the church, who play an important part in the ongoing life of St. Mark's, further enhanced the proceedings with their presentation of a short drama entitled "Alleluia for St. Mark's."

St. Mark's has taken for its theme over the coming year: "Treasure the past, Celebrate the present, Nurture the future."
