St. Jude Medical Announces First European Implant of SJM Tailor Annuloplasty Band for Heart Valve Repair.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Jude Medical, Inc. (NYSE:STJ) announced today the first European implant of its new SJM Tailor(R) Annuloplasty Band for use in heart valve repair procedures.

The implant was performed by Professor Hans-Joachim Schafers, M.D., at the University of Saarland in Homburg/Saar, Germany, on a 57-year-old woman suffering from mitral valve endocarditis (inflammation). The patient is doing well and the device is performing as expected, according to Dr. Schafers.

"The Tailor Band offers a convenient and efficient option for surgeons who prefer a flexible partial ring," said Dr. Schafers. "The delivery system makes implantation exceptionally easy, facilitating a smooth procedure for the physician and patient."

The SJM Tailor(R) Band, which was launched in the U.S. in July 2004, is a flexible band that accommodates the natural movement of the mitral valve annulus, a supporting structure around the mitral valve leaflets. It can be used in both mitral and tricuspid heart valve repair procedures. St. Jude Medical also offers the SJM Tailor(R) Ring, which is designed for surgeons who like the option of either implanting a full ring or customizing to a band, and the SJM(R) Seguin Ring, for those physicians who prefer a semi-rigid alternative.

"We are pleased to offer our physician customers a wide range of options for heart valve repair procedures, which are increasing in prevalence," said George J. Fazio, President of St. Jude Medical's Cardiac Surgery business. "The SJM Tailor(R) Band adds a versatile flexible alternative for surgeons who prefer using partial rings, and adds breadth to our portfolio of repair products."

The SJM Flexible Annuloplasty Delivery System allows easy implantation of the SJM Tailor(R) Band with a one-step, push-button release. The handle quickly and securely attaches and detaches, while an extension handle offers an alternative for minimally invasive procedures. Malleable nitinol alloy sections of the holder and sizers are easily shaped, yet revert to their original form during heat sterilization.
