Sri Lanka : Two new Chief Ministers, PC members sworn in.
Dayasiri Jayasekera was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the North Western Province. He obtained the largest number of preferential votes for any candidate in the Provincial Council election history in Sri Lanka.
Sarath Ekanayake took oaths as the Chief Minister of Central Provincial Council before President Rajapaksa.
The Governor of Northern Province G. A. Chandrasiri handed over the letter of appointment for the Chief Minister post to the former Supreme Court Judge and the Chief Minister candidate of Tamil National Alliance (TNA), C.V. Vigneswaran on Tuesday.
President Rajapaksa led UPFA secured an overwhelming mandate at the Provincial Council Elections 2013, winning two out of three provincial councils North Western and Central in which elections were held.
In North Western Province, the UPFA obtained 705,188 votes which 66% of the total votes cast in the province. The ruling party obtained 34 out of 50 seats.
The UPFA secured a sweeping victory in the elections to the Central Provincial Council by obtaining 60% of the votes and won 36 out of the total 56 seats.
Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has won the first ever provincial council elections in Northern Province.
The party won all five districts in the Province and secured 30 of the 38 seats for the newly formed Council.
The UPFA has secured seven seats in the Council.
