Spotting the cream of athletics crop.

ONE hundred budding young athletes from 50 schools across the city attended a Talent ID event at Waver tree Athletics Centre.

The day was part of Liverpool City Council's Sportlinx project, the biggest health and fitness programme in Europe.

The children invited to the event were the best Sportlinx have tested so far this year and it was an opportunity for them to showcase their talents in a number of activities including running, jumping and throwing.

Among the coaches were Britain high jumper Robert Mitchell, international marathon runner Jenny Clague, Great Britain athlete Kate McGing and talented 800m runner Vicky Griffiths.

Griffiths, who is one of the Talent ID co-ordinators, said: "Sportlinx encourages youngsters to get involved in sport. It's all about making sure talented kids have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

This was the first of three Talent ID events this year - the next one is after Easter."

Sportlinx carries out fitness tests on year five pupils across the city and those in the top 5% are invited to the Talent ID days.

The top 10 children from the day at Waver tree, who scored the highest points across all the activities, will be sent one year's free membership to Liverpool Harriers. The rest of the children will be invited to attend coaching sessions close to home.
