Spotlight on Regions.

Mark your calendars now for these upcoming regional meetings:

Region I--"Meeting the Workforce Challenges of the New Millennium" is the theme for AVA's Region I conference August 4-6. The conference, hosted by the West Virginia Vocational Association, will be held at Charleston Convention Center in Charleston, W. Va. Attendees should contact the Marriott Hotel in Charleston for accommodations. For more information, contact Ernie Powers at South Charleston High School, (304) 766-0352. The professional development chair for Region I is Jeff Shaw, who also is a contact for conference information. Reach him at Penta County (Ohio) JVS, (419) 666-1120. Anyone who wishes to present at the conference should contact Powers or Shaw by April 15.

Region I also would like to recognize its 1998 outstanding professionals (all from West Virginia)--Ernie Powers, Teacher of the Year; Robert Cecil Summerfield, Educator of the Year; David Heath Treharne, Outstanding New Vocational Teacher.

Region II--AVA's Region II Fall Conference will be hosted by the Georgia Vocational Association October 21-24 in Atlanta. Check the Region II Web page at for updates on conference information.

Region III--The 1999 Region III Leadership Conference will take place June 13-15 at the Downtown Radisson Hotel in Indianapolis, Ind. Conference topics will include teacher preparation issues, technical proficiencies and teaching standards. There also will be a professional development activity for all Region III state association officers. All conference attendees will have the opportunity to visit several employers and other points of interest in the Indianapolis area. Region IV--"Experience the Possibilities" is the theme for AVA's Region IV spring conference in Biloxi, Miss., April 8-11. The Holiday Inn Beachfront Coliseum is where vocational-technical and career educators from Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico will convene for four days of informative and innovative sessions for teachers, career and guidance counselors and administrators. Representatives from AVA's national office will provide training sessions on effective leadership and member recruitment. On Friday evening of the conference, there will be a candlelight tour and buffet at Beauvoir, the former home of Jefferson Davis. On Sunday morning, an awards programs will include Forward to Excellence 2000 winners. For more information, contact James Pettigrew, Region IV policy committee representative, at (601) 936-5535.

Region V.--AVA's Region V Leadership Conference will take place April 22-24, in Rapid City, S.D., at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn. The theme for the conference is "Creating Futures--Dakota Style." Rapid City Regional Airport is the local airport and is serviced by Delta, United Express and Northwest Airlines. Call (605) 348-4000 to make reservations at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, which has an airport courtesy shuttle.
