Spotlight: Your Child: What your child's fund could make.

IN a deposit account: pounds 250 invested in a deposit account paying 5.25 per cent a year for 18 years, with a second pounds 250 added after seven years, would be worth pounds 1067, according to independent investment adviser Chase de Vere.

However, if you made the maximum allowable additional contribution of pounds 1200 a year, your child would have a nest egg worth pounds 36,448.

In a stock market fund: pounds 250 invested in an equity-based fund growing at eight per cent a year over 18 years, with a second pounds 250 added at age seven, would be worth pounds 1583. Adding the maximum allowable pounds 1200 a year would raise the total to pounds 48,148
