POP sensation One Direction knew they had made it to the big time when they came face-to-face with themselves at Madame Tussauds.

The boys - the hottest boy band on the planet - have had the ultimate accolade of having their waxworks unveiled at the London venue.

The heart-throbs had a peek at their lookalikes during a secret viewing.

Liam Payne, from Wolverhampton, said he was overwhelmed by the experience. "This is definitely a privilege, getting a wax figure," he said.

The figures were unveiled to fans yesterday, where guests can visit them until July 11 before they embark on a Madame Tussauds world tour, taking in New York and Sydney with more locations to be announced. The waxworks wear outfits donated by the boys themselves. Each band member gave two sittings where staff took their precise measurements.

A team of 40 people worked on the figures, at a cost of PS150,000 each.

One Direction have become the first boy band to be given their own waxworks since The Beatles in 1964.
