Washington Cricket Club been bowled over ( by an unexpected sporting delivery.

The Wearside outfit, which plays in the Durham Coast League, has been given its own 40ft by 20ft building unit ( entirely free.

The unit, which the club hopes to turn into a proper clubhouse ( was donated by local businessman Rod Widdrington, whose son plays for Washington's under-11 team.

Secretary Dave Marshall said: "It is a fantastic gesture by Rod with the new season approaching and we are thrilled at the prospect of having our own clubhouse at last.

"We hope we can attract sufficient volunteers through the Cricketforce scheme to help us do it up so it is ready for the start of the new season in April."
