Sports letter: League on rise.

Byline: S PAGE

PCONGRATULATIONS on your coverage of local sport. It is one of the main reasons I buy the Sunday Mercury every week.

However, I wonder if you are aware of the growth of rugby league in our area.

Birmingham Bulldogs have been accepted into National League Three (only three divisions below Super League!) and are on the verge of moving into a new pounds 1.2 million facility within the city.

Coventry Bears are also in National League Three and are themselves building a new ground.

Since changing to a summer sport in 1996 rugby league has been spreading fast across the country.

Besides the success of Birmingham and Coventry there is a strong Midlands division which includes Leicester Phoenix, Wolverhampton Wizzards, Birmingham Bulldogs (A team), Coventry Bears (A team), Telford Raiders, Worcester Saints, Gloucester Warriors and newly formed Rugby Raiders.

All these teams have websites. Please have a look or log on to and go to Rugby League Conference.
