SPORTS ANTI-DOPING AGENCY. An anti-doping agency was scheduled to
be launched in Barbados in January to bring the Caribbean into
conformity with world anti-doping standards in sports, reports AP (Dec.
30, 2005). The Regional Anti-Doping Organization will conduct tests,
manage the findings, answer appeals and run anti-drug educational
campaigns in the 15-member Caribbean Community. Nonmembers Bermuda and
Cuba are also interested in joining the organization, said Adrian Lorde,
head of the Barbados National Anti-Doping Commission. The agency is
being set up in response to a request from the World Anti-Doping Agency,
with funding for two years from the Commonwealth Fund for Technical
Corporation, he said. The Montreal-based World Anti-Doping Agency was
established in Nov. 1999 to promote the international fight against
doping in sports.
