Byline: DAVE SMALL

In less than 12 months, Steve Bruce has transformed the Blues from an average first division side that was going nowhere under Trevor Francis into a team that will more than hold its own in the Premier.

The board have backed Bruce with the same financial backing they had given Francis, the difference was that Bruce has not wasted a penny on over-the-top players who thought St Andrews was a rest home for retired has-beens.

He has signed players with passion and commitment, players that will help Blues take a few big scalps this season.

Yet big Ron Atkinson, writing in a Sunday newspaper, says he's not sure Steve has done enough to ensure his side's survival at the highest level, and predicts that Blues will finish in last place. Is Atkinson talking through his claret and blue eyes? Or through something else? Stick to advertising Ratners jewellery Ron! It's more your style. Roll on September 16.

DAVE SMALL,
