Meanwhile, Beckham has warned his new Real Madrid team-mate, Michael Owen, that he faces a battle to win a regular place in the star-studded Spanish side.

However, Owen still believes that he can be a success at the Bernabeu following his pounds 8m move from Liverpool, insisting that he expects "to be the main goalscorer in every team that I play in".

With Raul, Ronaldo and Fernando Morientes to overcome, as well as a language barrier and settling-in process to negotiate, the striker certainly has a challenge on his hands over the coming months.

While Beckham believes Owen has the talent to make a major impact in Spain, he knows the potential pitfalls that could lie ahead.

"It's always tough going into a team like Real Madrid. When I signed for them, people were saying `where was I going to play?'" said the England captain.

"You've got to work hard to get into this team."
