AFTER a winter of contentious umpiring decisions, those ingenious innovators on Channel Four have recruited Hawkeye to further enhance their coverage and clarify marginal incidents, writes Ian Coyne.

Spokesman Gary Double explained: "Hawkeye is based on the technology used to guide missiles and brain surgeons' scalpels. It creates a three- dimensional view of the probable path of the ball, accurate to five millimetres."

Respect to the saviours of cricket on terrestrial telly for stumping up the cash to let the boffins develop the system.
