Paul Gascoigne is winning his battle against the bottle - but has admitted getting through Christmas will be hard.

The 36-year-old former England and Newcastle United midfielder said: "I'm just trying to cope with life without drink - but Christmas will be tough. It has been hard work and it'll be hard over Christmas - but I've got to accept I've got an alcohol problem and I can't drink again."

Gascoigne, whose hopes of a return to the Premiership were ended by Wolves after a recent trial, is unsure of the future.

He is pondering taking part in a celebrity survival show, after admitting he "bottled out" of taking part in a previous edition.

And the former Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers midfielder revealed an offer from a club in Cyprus also appeals.

He said: "I've been off the drink for eight or nine months now.

"But I need to know where I am in my own head over the next couple of weeks before I make any rash decisions - because I've made enough of those over the years."
