Silloth will remain on the Open Championship regional qualifying rota next year despite radical changes to the system.

The Cumbria course has been on the list of 16 courses used for Open regional qualifying for the past two years and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, who run the Open, have decided that both regional and final qualifying will remain.

That's despite new venues and dates announced by Alnmouth's Michael Tate, now assistant secretary of the R and A, for International Final Qualifying (IFQ) which will be introduced for the 2004 Open Championship to be played at Royal Troon on July 15-18.

IFQ competitions will be played in Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and America, starting on January 8-9 with 36 holes qualifying at the Atlantic Beach club in Cape Town, South Africa. Kingston Heath in Melbourne will host the next IFQ on January 19-20 and the Asian qualifier will be at Saujana Golf and Country Club, Kuala Lumpur two months later on March 30-31 Each of the first three IFQs will have a minimum of four places into the Open at Troon but from the European and American IFQs, there will be at least 12 places available.

The European qualifier will be played over Sunningdale Old and New Courses on June 28, the same day as the American IFQ on the Gold and Blue courses at the Congressional Country Club, Maryland.

Local Final Qualifying (LFQ) will take place at Glasgow Gailes, Irvine, Turnberry Kintyre and Western Gailes on Saturday and Sunday July 10-11.

Just 12 places will be available from LFQ, that's three at each course.
