Spirit returns to Dewsbury with fire- breathing dragons.

Kirklees Council is pleased to announce the return of Spirit, Dewsbury's annual free outdoor show, on Friday 26 February from 7.00pm.

Mechanical dragons as tall as double decker buses will rampage through the town centre, breathing fire and entertaining crowds before their final encounter with the dragon slayer in front of the town hall.

This year's show is performed by Spanish street theatre company, Sarruga, who have taken their magical shows starring mythical mechanical monsters all over the world.

Cllr David Sheard, Cabinet member for regeneration (North Kirklees) commented: "Last year 5,000 people came to Dewsbury to watch international acrobats, Grupo Puja, and I'm expecting this year's event to be just as popular. Sarruga's dragons performed in Liverpool during celebrations for City of Culture, where they attracted thousands of spectators, so I'm looking forward to Dewsbury giving them equally as big a welcome."

The 45-minute procession begins outside the town hall, making its way towards the market before returning to Market Place and Longcauseway for the finale of fire breathing dragons battling with St. George. However, there will be some changes to the event format this year due to the major work which is underway at the town hall. As the roof will be exposed, the show will not finish with the traditional firework finale.

It is recommended that young children are carefully supervised during the show as the dragons and performers come very close to the audience For the most up to date information visit
