The author analyzes Spike Lee's Bamboozled and the influences of minstrel performer Bert Williams, director Oscar Micheaux, writer Ralph Ellison, and painter Michael Ray Charles on the film, in the context of blackface in American culture. She considers the significance of these men in relation to W.E.B. Du Bois' project of using fiction to convey the truth of history; the film and its intersections with Williams, Micheaux, Ellison, and Charles, and its themes and forms used to create references to the past, namely double articulation as Du Bois' double-consciousness, symbolic naming and casting practices, objects as signs, and the content of narrative structures, including satire; and Lee's purpose in the film.
