Speke-ing up for the people; ECHO COMMENT.
FORGIVE us for not turning somersaults over the news that multinational pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline is chipping in an extra pounds 1m for the people of Speke. They have not decided to shut down the Speke plant because of bad production levels or poor industrial relations.
Their decision is based on maximising profits for the shareholders in two huge corporations welded together to become an even bigger money-making machine.
Today's promise of pounds 1m to be donated to economic regeneration initiatives in the area is, of course, to be welcomed, and will no doubt be put to very good use.
And it comes on top of the company's original offer of pounds 1m to help with staff retraining and a further pounds 1m for the nearby Partnership For Learning training initiative in Jaguar's Halewood plant.
For ordinary people, pounds 3m is a spectacular amount of money but, for a community facing the loss of 700 jobs, it is a drop in the ocean.
And for a global corporation on the scale of GlaxoSmithKline, it will hardly register a blip on the balance sheet.
