Special events: featured at ACPE annual meeting in San Francisco.

Innovation has become the hot button topic in health care. But in today's fast-paced, money-driven environment, who has time to think up new ideas, let alone put them into action?

There are a number of special events planned for this year's ACPE Annual Meeting aimed at inspiring busy physician leaders to find and implement innovative ideas. From dynamic speakers to first-rate networking opportunities, there are plenty of special events aimed at reinvigorating participants about the role of a physician leader and the health care industry as a whole. All of these events are free and open to all who attend.

Friday, April 27

The meeting will be held April 27-May 1 at the Westin St, Francis in San Francisco. The event kicks off with a keynote address by Peter Sims, author of the book Little Bets: How Breakthrough Ideas Emerge from Small Discoveries.

Little Bets tells the story of progressive thinkers such as Apple CEO Steve Jobs, architect Frank Gehry and the filmmakers at Pixar, who take small, experimental steps in order to achieve outstanding results. He'll discuss how these leaders succeed by being willing to experiment, learning from small failures and tapping into their creative sides.

Also Friday is an address by Lucian Leape, MD, internationally recognized leader of the patient safety movement since publication of his seminal article, Error in Medicine, in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 1994. Leape will speak during the Induction Ceremony for new Certified Physician Executives and ACPE Fellows, where he will also be named an honorary Fellow of ACPE. A gala cocktail reception will follow.

In addition, Leape is presenting ACPE's first-ever Leape Ahead Award, which will recognize medical schools and teaching hospitals making extraordinary strides in promoting a culture of leadership, professionalism, communication and teamwork among medical students and residents. This award was created by ACPE's volunteer Task Force on Medical Education, led by Susan L. Freeman, MD, MS, CPE, FACPE and Kendall M, Rogers, MD, CPE in an effort to meet its goal of promoting leadership training for medical students and residents.

During the annual business meeting, ACPE will recognize the outgoing president, Clair Callan, MD, MBA, CPE, FACPE, and welcome new president Larry Riddles, MD, MBA, CPE, FACS, FACPE. New officers and board members will also be announced. ACPE CEO Peter Angood will give an address on the state of the College and discuss plans for the future.

Saturday, April 28

On Saturday, ACPE will host its annual poster presentation, called Share Your Story. Participants will share their inspiring stories, successful projects--even a few flops. To view presentations from previous years, go to
