Special Effects Feature Takes Flight.

A NEW FEATURE devoted to showcasing the creative uses of decorative laminates solid surfacing materials, specialty finishes, designer hardware and other eye-catching, man-made innovations takes off on its maiden voyage on page 36 of this issue.

Special Effects aims to inform and inspire readers about the design potential afforded by some of the hottest products of the market. Special Effects aspires to go beyond the every-day by showing how these design-oriented products can accent or transform cabinets, case goods, fixtures and other wood products into functional art.

This month, for example, Special Effects looks at some of the masterwork of designer Judson Beaumont, fabricated by Straight Line Designs of Vancouver, BC. Our feature hones in on Beaumont's inventive and stylish use of high-pressure laminates in unusually designed chests.

Multiple Exposure

One good reason to catch Special Effects in this issue is that it will not be back until March. That's because the column is scheduled to run in alternate issues of Wood & Wood Products (odd months) and its sister publication Custom Woodworking Business (even months).

Readers of either magazine who enjoy the column can see what they're missing on the Industrial Strength Woodworking Web site: www.iswonline.com. All Special Effects columns, beginning with the one in this month's issue, will be archived online.

In addition, Special Effects ... The Magazine, will be published as a standalone piece polybagged with the October 2001 issues of W&WP and CWB.

Barb's Back

The debut of Special Effects marks the return of Design Editor Barbara Garet. Barbara, who authored our Design Lines column throughout most of the 1990s, will author the new feature. She is a seasoned veteran of the High Point Furniture Market, NeoCon and other furniture trade shows.

Among her credits, Barb contributed the design chapters for W & WP's Centennial Issue in 1995 and first of two Millennium issues in 1997. She has served as a judge for numerous furniture design contests including the ASID Pinnacle Awards, CWB's Design Portfolio Awards and the IWF Student Design Competition.

Barb has a great eye for design and an equally great perspective for writing about it.

Your Ideas Welcomed

We invite readers to submit ideas for future Special Effects columns. Most importantly we're interested in receiving leads that include high-quality photographs and notes about the projects depicted.
