Sparky: Get a grip on farce; Hughes: Scrap shakes farce.

MARK HUGHES renewed his call for the pre-match handshake ritual to be scrapped after John Terry was snubbed by Anton Ferdinand and QPR skipper Park Ji-Sung before Chelsea's 0-0 draw at Loftus Road.

Ferdinand also refused to shake hands with Ashley Cole, who had reluctantly given evidence in Terry's trial, where the Chelsea skipper was cleared of racially abusing Ferdinand during the fixture last October.

QPR's Park wouldn't shake hands with Terry at the prematch coin toss either. Hughes confirmed that new boy Park, a Turn To Page 58

From Back Page former Manchester United team-mate of Ferdinand's brother Rio, made a personal decision to snub Terry.

Rangers boss Hughes said: "I'd like the handshakes scrapped. You can talk with misty eyes about the old days but things have moved on and changed for the better but I'm not sure about this.

"I think the Respect campaign has done a lot of good work and it's something we should all embrace "But this element is something that causes more problems than it solves and that was not its intention when it was introduced."

Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo added: "We offered to shake hands and we've done our part. If other people feel differently, that's their problem.

"The focus should be on the football not on the handshake."
