Sparkling makes amends with Balakot Cup triumph.

Byline: Aftab Gilani

LAHORE -- Bay filly Sparking, who was thrice beaten in her previous outings, landed the Balakot Cup during the first day/night Lahore Winter Meeting on seasonal debut at the floodlit Racecourse here on Sunday evening

The 70-100 favourite Sparking, trained by Rashid Aziz, was given a superb ride by jockey Tahir Abbas to beat onrushing bay filly Me Raqsam with chestnut horse Gondal Prince third, half-a-length further back third. The time recorded on the soggy track was one minute 9 2/5 much slower than the normal timing over 1,100 metres distance.

A moderate rain shower which pelted over various parts of the city had made the lush green grass track wet, which delayed the start of the racing programme by over half-an hour.

The winning owner Khawaja Mohammad Atif received the cup from Lahore Race Club (LRC) member Adil Hayat soon after the race.

Her victory gave Tahir Abbas his second winner of the day after his lucky win on bay gelding Salam-e-Lahore on an objection which he lodged against winning bay filly Qamar Choice was upheld by LRC stewards for crossing without being two lengths ahead in violation of the rule.

Trainer Rashid Latif too was accredited with yet another success when he sent Madhuri Dixit to win the supporting event and complete a well-earned double.

The LRC stewards came down hard on rider Mohammad Zulfiqar, who was given marching order with a six-month suspension along with a fine of Rs30,000 for not allowing bay gelding Turab Prince to run on merit in the second race.

Sunday's races were attended by LRC chairman, Tariq Aziz, stewards retired Lt Col Masud Pervez, Khawaja Mohammad Arif and Fawad Ahmad Cheema and Jockey Club of Pakistan chairman and ex-chief secretary Punjab Hafeez Akhtar Randhawa besides a number of LRC members.

The next races will be held on Saturday because of Muharram-ul-Haram.
