Spanish Unions call for strike against government''s economic policies.

Unions of Spain called for a general strike on

September 29 in a protest against government decisions on the labor reform and

wage cuts and the economic policies and unfair labor rights. The General Secretary of the Federation of Unions, Ignacio Fernandez Toxo,

said in a statement today that the labor reform expected to be approved in

final form in Congress on the 9th of September affects the workers' rights and

provides cheap dismissal, besides giving companies absolute power over

workers.

He stated that the strike would be necessary, indispensable and legitimate

to pressure the government and push for radical changes in the current social

and economic policies. Toxo said more than 700,000 people will become below the poverty line in

Spain, and conditions may get even worse, unless the government seeks to

change its policies. Furthermore, he considered that the acceleration in the pace of economic

growth is the only way to ensure more job opportunities for citizens and to

reduce levels of unemployment in the country.
