Southeast Arkansas is home to charming towns, misty swamps of the Arkansas River delta and lush forests of the timberland country. Agriculture is king in this region, thanks to rich alluvial soils.

Major attractions

* Arkansas Railroad Museum. This features railroad memorabilia and a restored 1942 steam engine originally built in Pine Bluff. In Pine Bluff. Call 541-1819.

* The Arts and Science Center of Southeast Arkansas. Works of art and science are on exhibit. Theater productions and concerts are also offered. In Pine Bluff. Call 536-3375.

* Confederate Air Show. Antique aircraft and a tour of the air field are featured. In Pine Bluff. Call 534-3447.

* Delta Cultural Visitors Center. This features an interpretive exhibit, "The Arkansas Delta: Landscape of Change," an attached caboose, resource room, gift shop and information desk. In Helena. Call 388-8919.

* Drew County Historical Museum. Housed in a two-story building constructed in 1909, this museum contains antiques, collected by pioneer Drew County families, and Indian artifacts. In Monticello. Call 367-7446.

* Farmer's Daughter Tours of the Delta. Three- to six-hour agriculture, aquaculture and historic tours. Tours can be customized for groups. In Dumas. Call (800) 728-5566.

* Fish Farming Experimental Laboratory. This aquaculture facility emphasizes research requirements for commercial production of catfish, bait minnows and striped bass. In Stuttgart. Call 673-4483.

* Phillips County Museum. Civil War memorabilia and other historic material are featured here. In Helena. Call 338-3537.

* South Arkansas Arts Center. The center includes three gallery areas, community theater productions, a performing arts series and visual arts workshops. Group rates are available. In El Dorado. Call 862-5474.

* Warfield Concerts. Tickets to cover all free concerts at the Lily Peter Auditorium are available. In Helena. Call 572-6105.
