South Eugene reaches state tournament.

CORVALLIS - The South Eugene boys water polo team advanced to the state championships with a 13-9 victory over Redmond in the first round of the playoffs at Osborn Aquatic Center on Friday.

David Lee led the Axemen with six goals, and Elliott Stone and Max Gordon each had five saves. Brandon Durhan scored three goals for Redmond and goalie Brent Vaughan had 11 saves.

In other playoff results, Austin Mason scored six goals to lead Sandy to a 22-9 victory over Sheldon. Reed Rosenberg had four goals for the Irish.

Newberg ousted Cottage Grove 27-10, and Tualatin beat Ashland 15-10.

The girls playoffs will be held today at Osborn Aquatic Center.

Cottage Grove faces Tigard at 9 a.m., Southern League champion South Eugene plays Redmond at 2:50 p.m., and Sheldon faces Newberg at 5:10 p.m. Southern No. 3 Ashland plays Gresham at 12:30 p.m.

The eight-team state tournament is scheduled to be held next Friday and Saturday at Osborn Aquatic Center.

South Eugene's boys are scheduled to meet Westview at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
