South African given helping hand.

South African angler Pete Kariel experienced some North-East hospitality at Sharpley Springs/Waters fishery this week.

After losing a quality 12-pounder to a snapped line, extremely helpful advice from Sharpley saw him bring a hard-fighting four-pounder to the net.

Simon Gaines from Sedgefield carefully returned the biggest rainbow of the week ( a 16lb 12oz one that took a Black Buzzer.

At Sweethope Loughs, G Price and K Findell, fishing Dawson's Olive, had six fish off the Top Lough for 20lb.

They returned the following day and had 11 fish for 31lb 11oz on Black and Green Fritz. Kevin Tipple from Throckley, fishing an Okey Dokey, had best fish of the week at 11lb 4oz. The sessions at Sweethope are now 9am to 1pm, 1pm to 5pm and 5pm to 9pm. Jubilee Lakes, which will be open on Bank Holiday Monday, produced two doubles this week. K Donnelly, from Blackhill, Consett, on his first visit to the fishery, was a bit concerned that he wouldn't know a double if he caught one but was left in no doubt after landing a magnificent 17lb 10oz rainbow on an Olive Hare's Ear. Andy Hudson from South Shields, fishing an Amber Bloodworm, had a fine rainbow of 15lb 12oz.

The cold easterly winds have made fishing difficult at Langley Dam this week, although this did not prevent J Wright from enjoying a good day's sport, landing the week's heaviest fish at 6lb and the week's best bag with five for 21lb.

Leadgate angler Kevin Blackwood won the Troutmaster fish-off at Knitsley Mill with the heaviest bag of 11lb 1oz.

F Davidson had the best fish on the fly at Caistron lakes ( a fine, hard-fighting rainbow of 8lb 8oz. Anglers enjoyed excellent sport at Witton Castle Lakes this week with most of the fish being taken from the top of slightly sub-surface.

Sporting permit anglers recorded good catches with Gary Dowson of Evenwood taking an 18-pounder on a Hare's Ear.
