We see this as the crowning glory of a life-long dedication to the service of African agriculture and to humanity at large. From FARAs perspective, your untiring effort to get FARA started on a good footing and seeing it through its formative years as well as your unflinching support using your good offices and personal goodwill deserve honourable mention.

We are therefore proud of this laudable achievement by our own Champion of the Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa. There could have been no other way to reward such exceptional dedication to a worthy cause.

Please accept again our sincere felicitations and cordial wishes to you and your family as you enjoy the joys of the moment. As remarked by the Chair of Africa Food Prize, H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, Dr. Nwanzes work demonstrates very well what one committed and visionary individual can do to guide and empower others to reach precisely the objectives we have discussed in this Forum.

He has been a passionate and persistent advocate for putting smallholder farmers at the center of the development agenda. He sees them not just as recipients of seeds or advice but as partners in learning how to do things better how to make the leap from subsistence survival to a thriving business.

Kanayo F. Nwanze is President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which is dedicated to ensuring that agriculture is a central part of the international development agenda, and that governments recognize the concerns of smallholder farmers and other poor rural people.

He has been a member of the World Economic Forums Global Agenda Council on Food Security since 2010. Dr. Nwanze was Director-General of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Africa Rice Center for a decade, where he was instrumental in introducing and promoting New Rice for Africa, or NERICA, a high-yield, drought- and pest-resistant variety developed specifically for the African landscape.
