Sony Music Entertainment Acquires Wireless Entertainment Company Run Tones; Announces Creation of Mobile Products Group.

NEW YORK -- Sony Music Entertainment (SME) announced today that it has acquired the wireless entertainment company Run Tones. This acquisition brings to SME both core technology for a variety of mobile services and an experienced executive team to lead SME's efforts in this key area of growth. Run Tones already offers a number of consumer and business-based wireless services, including RUNtones, a ringtone service; RUNpics, a personal photo service; Mobile Media Hub services, offering private label wireless portals; and mobile media production. The company's customers and partners include Adobe, AT&T Wireless, Ericsson, Nokia, Openwave, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, and the Warner Music Group.

Simultaneous with the acquisition of Run Tones, SME has created the Mobile Products Group, which will be part of the company's Sony Music Digital Services (SMDS) area. The Mobile Products Group will be responsible for the ongoing expansion of SME's global wireless efforts, which currently include ringtones and album previews, among other new products and services.

The Mobile Products Group will be led by Run Tones principals J.J. Rosen and Tim Nilson. Rosen has been named Vice President, Mobile Products Group, SMDS, in addition to continuing as CEO of Run Tones. He will report to Thomas Gewecke, Senior Vice President, SMDS. Nilson has been added the title Vice President, Mobile Technology, SMDS, and remains the Chief Technology Officer for Run Tones. He will report to Phil Wiser, Chief Technology Officer, Sony Music Entertainment. Both Rosen and Nilson will continue to be based in New York.

"Wireless services are an important area of expansion for Sony Music Entertainment, and Run Tones's solid technology and experience in this area will add key elements to our efforts," said Thomas Gewecke. "J.J. Rosen and Tim Nilson have proven track records and an eye for innovation, and we are pleased that they and their staff will be leading our new Mobile Products Group."

"Sony Music Entertainment is a great fit for Run Tones and its products," said J.J. Rosen. "We look forward to working with the new Mobile Products team to create more exciting wireless products for consumers, and continuing to build on Run Tones' business with the support of Sony Music Entertainment."

J.J. Rosen has over 15 years of music and Internet experience, and was one of the pioneers in the area of e-commerce. Prior to co-founding Run Tones, Rosen co-founded and was a President of N2K Inc., a vertically integrated music company, which was acquired by CDnow. Before N2K, Rosen held various posts with GRP Records, the groundbreaking jazz label owned by Universal, which became the first music company to produce its entire catalogue of titles in the digital format. While at GRP, Rosen worked in Business Affairs & Legal, negotiating licensing deals with third parties. Rosen previously held posts in the Sales and MIS departments of the company. Rosen holds an MBA in Finance from Rutgers University and a BA in Political Economy from Tulane University.

Tim Nilson has extensive experience in both technical/product development and international business development. He is an industry-recognized innovator with music technologies and has been involved with over 20 commercial product development initiatives within the media and entertainment industry since the early 1990s. Prior to co-founding Run Tones with Rosen, Nilson served as Director International Business & Product Development for CDnow where he was responsible for globalizing the company's business. Prior to CDnow, Nilson was Director Technology for Business Development at N2K Inc. and responsible for the technical product integration of N2K's Music Boulevard with such high-profile partners as AOL, MTV, Excite, Netscape and many others. Also while at N2K Inc., he was involved with ground-breaking product development initiatives such as digital downloads and music webcasts for high profile artists and ensembles such as David Bowie and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Nilson received a BA in Music Business and Management from the Berklee College of Music.
