Sony Computer to launch slimmed version of PlayStation 2 in Nov.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said Tuesday it will launch a smaller and lighter version of its popular PlayStation 2 computer game console in Japan and abroad in November.
The new PS2 is one-fourth the size of the existing model and half the weight, Sony Computer said.
The company will put the new version on sale in North America and Europe on Nov. 1 and in Japan two days later.
Priced at around 19,000 yen, the standard new PS2 will come with a terminal for online hookups.
Separately, Nintendo Co. said the same day that it will release its Nintendo DS handheld game console for 15,000 yen on Dec. 2.
The DS machine features two liquid-crystal displays, a touch-sensitive screen and communications software that enables up to 16 people to exchange information with letters and pictures.
Nintendo hopes to ship a total of 4 million units globally by March 2005.
The forthcoming DS, which is short for Dual Screen, will compete with the PlayStation Portal that Sony Computer plans to release later this year.
