THE Sonika Chauhan death case continues to remain intriguing with several unanswered questions being raised by her family. Kolkata Police are investigating the matter, but there is more to it than what meets the eye. The Viscera Report is awaited along with a medical report of Vikram Chatterjee, who was with Chauhan on the night of the incident.
Rajdip Majumdar, counsel of Vikram said, " Sonika and Vikram were in a relationship for more than six months.
Vikram admitted that he had consumed a few drinks at the party ( on the night that took Sonika's life), but was not intoxicated." Vikram is being questioned by Tollygunge Police and statements of more than 20 people have been recorded as well.
The victim's family however has been claiming that there are glaring lapses in the case.
A statement released by Sonika's uncle Patrick Quinn, who had also lodged the police complaint, questions a number of issues.
The five- hour delay in informing Sonika's parents has been questioned.
Sonika's belongings were not first handed over to Vikram's friend and not Sonika's family, nor did the police seize the same. Vikram's friend was even asked to try and unlock Sonika's phone. It has also been questioned if breath analyser test, blood test or urine test were done in the stipulated time. Evidence like cell phones, blood stained clothes and IDs of Sonika -- all unsealed -- were handed over to the family at the hospital.
Police came to Sonika's place to seize those only after 11 days.
Another crucial evidence -- the car -- was left in the open.
The footage from Lake mall were not collected. Also the first Forensic test of the car was done 30 hours after the incident.
Footage showing Vikram's father playing carom in the police station, while his son was being interrogated, flashed an unsual level of comfort.
There was also an eight- day delay in recording the statement of the witness. Interestingly, the charges framed in this case till now are bailable, though possibility of addition or modification of the sections depends only on evidences and the medical report yet to be received from the forensic team.
The awaited medical report is expected to provide a clearer picture, however.
Chauhan's family alleged that the probe has several loopholes
